While laws concerning porn and the transmission of pornographic images to or containing minors are across-the-board, there is little debate on the legality of porn when it concerns children. But older teenagers, while still considered children under the law, are going to naturally be more curious about porn and other sexual content online than their younger counterparts, and might intentionally seek out their idea of porn on the internet.
In the nearly uncensored world of the internet, unwary porn-seekers have the potential to inadvertently expose themselves to much more than they bargained for – everything from extreme hardcore porn to chat or email contact with a sexual predator. Though many parents may not want to deal with the reality of their own child’s sexuality, as parents they have a responsibility to educate their children and lay ground rules as to what is and isn’t safe and acceptable internet activity. The Federal Bureau of Investigation recommends parents take the following actions to keep their children from biting off more than they can chew:
Communicate with children about the risks of sexual victimization on the internet.
Spend time browsing the internet with your children and have them show you their favorite websites. Decide if the websites are appropriate for your child.
Keep the computer in a common room in the house, not in your child's bedroom. It is much more difficult for a potential online predator to communicate with a child when the computer screen is visible to other members of the household.
Utilize parental controls and/or blocking software. Use of chat rooms, in particular, should be heavily monitored. While parents should utilize these mechanisms, they should not totally rely on them.
Always maintain access to your child's online account and randomly check his/her e-mail. Be aware that your child could be contacted through the U.S. Mail. Be up front with your child about your access and reasons why.
Teach your child the responsible use of internet resources. There is much more to the internet experience than chat rooms.
Find out which computer safeguards are utilized by your child's school, the public library, and at the homes of your child's friends. These are all places where, outside your normal supervision, your child could encounter an online predator.
Understand that even if your child was a willing participant in any form of sexual exploitation that he/she is not at fault and is the victim. The offender always bears the complete responsibility for his or her actions.
In addition, parents should instruct children to:
Never arrange a face-to-face meeting with someone they met on the internet.
Never upload pictures of themselves onto the internet or send pictures to people they do not personally know.
Never give out identifying information such as their name, home address, school name, or telephone number.
Never download pictures from an unknown source, as there is a good chance it could be porn or other explicit images.
Never respond to messages or bulletin board postings that are suggestive, obscene, belligerent, or harassing.
Providing an open channel of communication with children is especially important, so that children feel they can ask for help in the event they receive porn or other solicitation from an unknown source; if children are made to feel embarrassed or shamed by such contact, they might be less likely to report it. Some signs that a child might be engaging in risky behavior on the internet include:
Your child spends large amounts of time on the internet, especially at night, and particularly in chat rooms.
You find porn on your child's computer.
Your child receives phone calls from a person you don't know or is making calls, sometimes long distance, to numbers you don't recognize.
Your child receives mail, gifts, or packages from someone you don’t know.
Your child turns the computer monitor off or quickly changes the screen on the monitor when you come into the room.
Your child becomes withdrawn from the family.
Your child is using an on-line account belonging to someone else, such as a computer at the library or at a friend’s house.
If your child has received pornographic images involving children from a third party or has been sexually solicited or received porn of any type from a user who knows the child is under age 18, the FBI recommends the following steps be taken:
Contact local or state law enforcement agency, the FBI, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Keep the computer turned off in order to preserve any evidence for law enforcement use.
Do not attempt to copy any of the images and/or text found on the computer unless directed to do so by the law enforcement agency.
It is important to note that, despite the myriad threats to children on the internet, from porn to sexual solicitation, a knee-jerk reaction such as banning children from using the internet is not a practical or effective long-term solution. As with any danger in the offline world, internet threats are best dealt with directly. Parents should work to educate their children about the risks of internet society and teach appropriate, realistic methods to avoid and combat threats posed by predators, porn, and unwanted solicitation.
http://home.stopsign.com/
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Eva_Gibson

Computer Networking - What Exactly is It?

What exactly is a computer network? Well it's were you are connected to several computers at once. There are several different kinds of computer networks out there, such as Local area network or LAN, Personal area network or PAN, Campus Area Network or CAN, Metropolitan are network or MAN, and a Wide area network or WAN. You can see there are several types of networks that are available in several different areas of the world.

They have different capabilities depending on what type of networking system they are. The PAN, which as the name states is a personal network, meaning it's used by one person. It's when you have a computer, scanner, fax, phone, etc, hooked up to your computer at home. The range of a PAN is quit small usually ranging in distances of 6 to 8 feet.

A LAN is usually in reference to a network that covers a small location or a house. Most LANs use Ethernet as the connection. A LAN and WAN are close in what they do, but a LAN can be distinguished by the higher level of data transfer rates.

Next is the CAN, Campus area network, as it name applies is a network connection of two or more LANs on a college or other campus, military bases, or other industrial complex. A CAN may actually be considered a MAN, but is most of the time in a much smaller area than a MAN.

A MAN or Metropolitan area network is where two or more LANs or even CANs are connected together. A MAN however will not go beyond the boundaries of the local city or town.

A WAN which remember is a Wide area network, it covers a broader geographic area than a city, and perhaps two or more counties would be connected this way.

Another network that we failed to list earlier is a Global area network or GAN, this is actually something that is being worked on by several different groups at present and has yet to be fully defined. What the basic idea of a GAN is, it will support mobile communication across LANs, such as wireless coverage or even satellite coverage.

Networks are an amazing thing that if you think about it really haven't been around for a long amount of time. At least not with the tremendous abilities that are now available to people who have computers in the World. It wasn't long ago when the only way to get on the internet was by dial-up services. Can you remember how slow that was? Wow a friend of mine is still using dial-up and I make sure to tease him every chance I get about it. Someday he'll finally change it. Granted when cable connections and DSL both came out they were a bit pricy, but now it's really cheaper to pay a bit of money and get a fast connection. It is analogous to the central nervous system of a human being; if human beings did have a functioning central nervous system, their bodies could not perform conscious and unconscious tasks on a daily basis such as breathing, walking eating, etc.

Operating systems control all the devices in a computer by means of software. Consequently, devices can be changed, patches can be added and security updates applied. This facility enables changes to be made to computer systems, eliminating the need to purchase a new one every time a change needs to be made to the system.

At the most basic level, an operating system manages the hardware and software resources of a computer and its peripherals. These resources include the processor, memory, disk space, the mouse and keyboard, and an attached printer. It also provides a stable and consistent means for applications to interact with the hardware without having to know the details of the hardware device.

During the standard use of a computer, various programs and input devices compete for the use of the central processing unit and request memory, storage and input and output for their own purposes. The role of the operating system is to insure that each application running gets the resources it needs on an equal basis while managing the used resources effectively and to their greatest capacity.

A consistent application interface is required if more than one computer is using the operating system. These consistent application interfaces, known as APIs, or application program interfaces, allow portability of applications, even if hardware configurations of the computers are different. They also enable operating systems to be sufficiently flexible to handle hardware from different manufacturers in almost any conceivable combination.

There are considered to be four categories of operating systems based on the types of computers they control and the applications they support.

Real time operating systems were developed to control machinery, scientific instruments and industrial systems. The primary function of a real time operating system is to manage the resources of a specific component so that a particular operation is executed exactly the same way every time. Real time operating systems typically are contained in sealed boxes, having little user interface and end-user capabilities.

Single use, single task operating systems enable a computer to do one application at a time. Mobile devices, such as cell phones and personal digital assistants tend to have this operating system installed.

Single user, multi-tasking operating systems enable a single user to run several applications at a time on a single computer.

Multi-user operating systems enable many users to employ the resources of a single computer simultaneously. This type of operating system must insure that resource usage is balanced, so one user does not affect the ability of others to get their tasks completed.

Visit http://www.OCRuggedLaptops.com for more information about the rugged laptop industry.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Mack_Harris

Did Redhat Linux or Windows Xp Computed 2 Power 9,999,999?

If you ask any computer expert about the advantage of computer use, two of their answers will be: The numeric computation capability, and the speed at which any task is done.

There many more advantages for using computers, but I will stress on the numeric computation aspect of those advantages.

I have done a test involving numeric computing to test the power of my Central Processing Unit of my computer. What I also did the test using Windows Xp and Redhat Linux, which are both installed on the same computer.

One of the reasons why I did the test, that I am about to explain, was my urge to sense the power of computer by looking at the screen.

Another reason was, I was getting fed up with Hearing about computer specs, without even knowing what they can do, or mean.

Here is an example:

Pentium II, 350 MHZ, Ram=256MB

Pentium III, 500 MHZ , Ram=512MB

and so on...

What is the power of the above specs?. How to approximate how many times the above P III is more powerful than the P II?.

Here is what I did:

I used my Pentium II, Ram=288MBs computer that has Windows XP and Linux installed on the same Hard disk in the same computer.

I tried to use the maximum numeric computational power of the computer by trying to get the result of multiplying the number '2" by itself 99 times and every time I got a result, I added another "9" until the computer can't handle the numbers anymore.

Using Windows Xp, I ran the calculator by typing "calc.exe" in the Run box. Then, I used the scientific calculator to handle the exponential calculation.

The most I was able to compute was 2 power 99,999. When I tried 2 power 999,999, Windows XP resulted in an error saying: "Invalid input for function"

Then, I rebooted my computer, and picked Redhat Linux to run on the same computer instead of Windows Xp. Once Linux prompted me to login, I used the mathematical utility Linux has. It is called by typing "bc" at the command line.

Once I ran "bc", I typed 2^99,999, the same maximum number I used in Windows Xp calculator . In about 2 seconds, i got the result.

Then, I tried a bigger number, 2^999,999 which Windows Xp scientific calculator could not handle. In about 5 seconds, I got the result on the screen. then, I added one more digit to compute 2^9,999,999 which is 2 multiplied by itself 10 Millions times minus one.

I waited about 35 minutes, then Linux BC application produced the result on the screen by showing few screens full of numbers from left to right, and
top to bottom.

Now you probably thinking, how does this computing relate to the performance of the CPU, or the whole computer as a whole.

Here is the answer:

What I discussed so far is using certain numbers to get the result of the formula 2 power 9,999,999. While running the calculation using "bc" in Linux. there another command to track the running processes in real time.

So, as you are running the calculations, you use another utility called "top" in RedHat Linux.

Once you run "top", the system shows you on the screen a list of applications, with all details about the resources consumed for each. The list is updated every few seconds, and each line shows the name of application.

So, to see the computation performance of "bc", you look up the line that says "bc". Then, you look on the same line that will show you information about "bc" like:

1-the time it is been running
2-The memory consumption in % of total ram
3-How much CPU power is being used for the application in %
and more variables.

You can watch the screen for the updated time the application
has been running for the current moment. Once the calculation is presented on the screen, you will know the calculation is done. You look at the time you just recorded right before the application ended.

The time the application took to calculate the formula: 2^9,999,999 and the memory used, in addition to the CPU power will give you an approximate idea about what your computer can do.

Also, you can use the above test to compare two computers and get and idea about the power.

Here is an example:

If computer P II, Ram=256Mbs took 30 minutes to compute 2^9,999,999; then, you ran the same test 2^9,999,999 with P III, Ram=512Mbs that took about 15 minutes, which is 1/2 the time it took before.

Then, you can approximate that the power of P III is about twice that of P II. Do, you get the idea?

In summary, there is an easy way for you to explore the power and performance in front of you, right on the screen. I was able to achieve this task by using Linux, and Windows XP that are installed on the same computer. I also found out that Linux can do better computation that Windows Xp.

Thanks,

George Chamoun created a Free guide that shows you step by step how to install two operating systems.
